nlp certification

"There are those who are constantly willing to re-examine what they think they know.
There are others who cannot deal with the idea that what they were taught might be wrong." - Jerald Tennant

Certification, for most people thinking about NLP Training, is a very important aspect. To receive a valid certification from a recognised  professional, credible organisation is too often all important.  It is therefore useful to understand exactly what NLP certification is and to recognise those NLP membership organisations which are actually credible and all are not.

Certification is by the Trainer alone!

Certification in NLP is assessed and awarded by the trainer of the course that you attend. There is no one else involved in this process, it is the trainer alone! Generally, people are very interested in certification with a particular NLP membership organisation. There is no such thing! None of the existing NLP Membership Organisations can assess & certificate, ONLY the trainer can!

However the trainers assessment & certificate may in turn be 'recognised' by one or more of the NLP membership organisations. The membership organisations recognise the certificate based on the trainer paying them a membership fee, no other reason as far as I can see! It is often implied that recognition is because the trainer has met certain ‘standards’ laid out by these organisations but crucially none of the organisations are able to monitor their own standards during the training itself. The membership organisations are built on traditional business structures rather than the underlying principles of NLP. i.e. NLP is not about being 'standard', it is more acurately about the pursuit of Excellence. No intelligent person wants to be simply 'standard', we want to excel!

Accreditation, Verification & Recognition

NLP is in the public domain, no NLP membership organisation can legitimately claim to 'accredit' NLP Trainings. Most NLP membership organisations seek to create an illusion of credibility and quality by using words such as 'accredited', 'recognised', 'verified' etc. NLP is not a centrally regulated field. Some membership organisations claim to be self regulated, but centrally no membership organisation has the capability to manage the quality of trainings delivered and recognised by their member trainers. Let them demonstrate it to you first, then be impressed!

'Internationally recognised'!! Think about it. These 'International' organisations are coming into India. Their 'international' footprint has traditionally been America & Europe. Even with rounding up, that is less than 800 million people. India alone has 1.2 billion people. An Indian Certificate is WORTH 50% more than an 'Internationally recognised' certificate - LOL

About ClassNLP Certifications

For ClassNLP all in-house certifications are assessed and awarded by the trainer Charles Saldanha, that’s me!  All my certifications are endorsed through IPANLP – the Indian Professional Association of NLP, an initiative of mine, a community of Indian NLP Enthusiasts. IPANLP has already gained recognition, both verbally and in writing, from a number of international NLP membership organisations and more. Already some of the mainstream NLP Membership organisations are even copying some aspects of the IPANLP!

The IPANLP, through its community, endorse quality NLP Training, that is, respectful to the original intentions of the co-creators of NLP. Distinct to most of the current efforts which are tantamount to ‘ticking boxes’! Hence IPANLP provides the only credible, endorsed NLP certificate available in India.

NOTE - the IPANLP is NOT an NLP membership organisation! It is a brand new and evolving concept which seeks to enable it's community to develop real skills and open up constructive discussion, which in turn earn their certificates genuinely credibility within the international NLP communities.

About Charles Saldanha's qualification to certificate NLP

I am the founder of the IPANLP and also the honourary NLP Meta Educator, certifying NLP Trainers and Educators, who in turn assess, evaluate & certify their own Practitioners and Master Practitioners, certificates which are endorsed through the IPANLP community.

Previously I have organised, run, trained or co-trained NLP courses at Diploma, Practitioner, Master Practitioner, Trainer and Master Trainer Track levels, which were ‘recognised’ for certification by one and usually more of the organisations that I was a paid up member of at the time - Association for NLP International CIC, International NLP Trainers Association, American Board of NLP & Anlp (India).

I have attended and been certified as an NLP Trainer by Inspiritive Australia (with John Grinder, Carmen Bostic St. Clair, Chris & Jules Collingwood), American Board of NLP, International NLP Trainers Association, Association for NLP International CIC, and Anlp (India). I am no longer a fee paying member of any of the NLP membership organisations although my standards are now significantly higher, above and beyond all of theirs.

What you should avoid - IMHO!

  • NLP Trainers who are members of multiple NLP membership organisations - This shows that they have no loyalty to one set of "standards" and interchange certification when they wish reduce the number of days of their trainings, reducing costs and increasing their profits.
  • NLP Trainings which offer multiple certificates - If you are offered certificates for NLP, Coaching, TimeLine, Hypnotherapy etc. etc. all in the same training beware! Pick a training that is a Master of one useful skill rather than a Jack of All! What's next, a certificate for each topic covered on the course? Perhaps a bonus certificate for completing lunch break?
  • NLP Trainings that claim to be 'accelerated' - a 5 day training is as much as can fit into 5 days, a 20 day training is as much as can be fitted into 20 days. What is 'accelerated' anyway, you go faster each day? How does that help? More importantly what vital aspects have been missed out in order to reduce it to 5 days?
  • NLP Trainings that claim to offer free repeats. If you didn't learn the skill at the training, there is no point going backward. Look to go forward and find another training provider to get a different perspective and a better training. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result" - Albert Einstein
  • NLP Trainings that offer free accomodation. It is cost effective for the training organisation to negotiate refreshments, lunch and even accommodation with the venue. However this is all taken into account in the fee you pay, so it really isn't FREE! Be clear that it is of the standard and quality that you require as you are paying for it somewhere in the fee anyway.

About other NLP Membership certification organisations

Below are some links to my experiences with the organisations that I've previously been a member of, if you are interested in an insiders view. It is not intended to imply that ClassNLP nor the IPANLP advocate or are advocated by any one or all of the organisations listed below. It is for information only about the mentioned NLP membership organisations and their previous & current relationship with myself.

"It is because we have at the present moment
everyone claiming the right of conscience
without going through any discipline whatsoever
that there is so much untruth being delivered to a bewildered world."
- Mahatma Gandhi
